Depends on the type of squirrel..some prefer tree hollows, others such as the California Ground Squirrel burrow underground.
Squirrels are CUTE!!! I remember I once was driving and a squirrel was drinking out of a puddle and i waited for it to take its drink....i was late to school but that's not the point :)
During the summer, they live in nests that look like big clumps of dead leaves in the tree. During the winter, they mostly live in hollows in the trees, unless they can find a way into your attic.
They prefer cavities in trees, sometimes taking over abandoned woodpecker nests. They will also utilize bird nesting boxes if these are large enough.
