Can you have squirrels as pets? u.k answers only?

I wouldn't catch one because its mean just intrigued. Can you have squirrels as pets? u.k answers only?
Grey squirrels are not considered to be indigenous to the UK and so if you ever caught one (for instance an injured one) then it is actually illegal to release it back into the wild again. You would have to either keep it, rehome it at a zoo etc or have it put down. I know, it sounds crazy to me too but it really is the law in this country! Can you have squirrels as pets? u.k answers only?
Do you wanna know what i think and thats if you have the right licence you can have what you want ...look at zoos for example they have licences to own those animals and they have squirrels and wildlife sancturys keep squirrels and if they are too injured to ever be released into the wild then someone must look after them.

The closest to a squirrel you could buy at a pet shop would prob be the chipmunk apparently its called a groundsquirrel in usa but i dunno and they always complain if they know someone in the uk is keeping one as a pet BUT the british ones are siberian chipmunks not american and are not just captured from the wild they are bred in captivity.

I don't know exactly how but i bet you could keep a squirrel as a pet ... people keep monkeys in the uk as pets lol so why not squirrels x
You can research the United Kingdom's rules. Another idea is to make your yard very welcoming to them (you can research what attracts squirrels) and get squirrel feeders so you can be close to them even if there not pets.
i dont think so, but u can kinda like encourage them to nest in the garden and feed em... i had 2 called salt and pepper that allways came for food and didnt run away when i came near them try that
No, but the two squirrels in my garden are practically pets as they are here to often! They annoy me though as they are constantly banging against the windows when i am studying waiting for nuts :P
no you can't, its illegal. if you lived in america, the story is different i think.
You could hold one captive perhaps, but it would never be a pet.
Surely not
no

Something is eating my tomatoes....could it be squirrels?

I had the same problem once. The squirrels would take a bite out of the tomato decide they didn't like it and try another one. They would do this over and over again until I put up chicken wire around the plants.Something is eating my tomatoes....could it be squirrels?
Yes. Squirrels will eat Tomatoes. Here are several ways to get rid of squirrels at the site below:

http://www.pecanworld.com/SQUIRREL.htmSomething is eating my tomatoes....could it be squirrels?
It's probably birds. You can put a netting over your tomato cages. Check with a gardening center or nursery for the correct type for birds.
Well, It would be more useful if you tried giving a good description of what the bite looked like. And it could be any kind of rodent. Skunk, Racoon, and yes maybe a squirrel? Could even be bugs? But if you have any animals and let them go out near your garden could be them. It is probably bad for them but it could.
Are you having any leaves chewed up on the plant? If so, could be hornworms, use liquid seven for them. If truly bites and not pecks, netting would be my best guess. My squirrels have always taken the whole tomato. You may want to try putting rubber snakes or 10'; plastic fishing worms on plant near tomatoes just to see what happens.

Where do gray squirrels make their nests and what do they make them out of?

See a live web cam of a gray squirrel's nest: http://newyorkwild.org/squirrels/squirre…

Some more info:

';Gray squirrels use three different types of nest. Summer Dreys and Winter Dreys are conspicuous constructions of leaves and twigs mounted high in treetops. Winter Dreys are made in layers. The outer layer consists of interwoven twigs while an inner layer is built up with softer materials consisting of bark, leaves, moss, fur, grass, and “found” materials. They are resistant to winter winds and provide protection where den sites may be in short supply. Summer Dreys are less elaborate and provide minimal protection from the elements. They are less likely to be used for litters. Tree dens in hollow trees are the preferred nest sites for raising young.';Where do gray squirrels make their nests and what do they make them out of?
Gray Squirrels, the most common in New England make their nests in deciduous trees, and use dry leaves that have fallen, sticks, and anything else they can scrounge up.Where do gray squirrels make their nests and what do they make them out of?
in trees there just plain gray but the other squirrles that have spots on them live in the ground

  • Where do squirrels hide their nuts?

In midden piles. Squirrels will bury large volumes of acorns, hickory nuts and walnuts underground or under a pile of leaves and forest floor litter, creating a cool, moist storage facility which they can use during the winter.

Link below refers to red squirrels, but the behavior is true for gray squirrels, too.Where do squirrels hide their nuts?
They bury them, usually close to the base of the tree where they have their little squirrel nesting place at. They tend to forget where they bury a good deal of them.Where do squirrels hide their nuts?
All over! Mostly they bury them, but I have watched squirrels take pecans from the tree in my yard and hide the pecans in my birdbath, under the propane tank, in a hollow of a tree in the woods behind me, all over the place.
    in the ground
    Between their legs.
    Depends, wat kind?
Apparently in my backyard...cause thats where they are fed by my family
In their pants. oops, was that out loud?

I think they store them in their nests, trees, and I think I saw a show on tv that said they bury them underground.
they hide where ever they live weather inside a tree, some where in your back yard, or in your house, or in your basement( you should check your basement :-P).
    in their scrotums.
thats,,,cute,,,look for post-its,,, i saw on television they use post-its to keep trak of where they hide thier nuts and goodies,,,
They keep them in a sac.
    in there cheeks!
they hide them were you cant find them

    What ARE SqUIRRELS ADAPTATIONs?

    Sharp claws for climbing trees.

    Strong back legs for jumping.

Able to digest toxic food like toadstools and acorns.

    Instinct for storing nuts.

    Resistance to snake bites.

Warm fur to survive the cold.

Good eyes to see predators and very fast reflexes.

Very good coordination and athletic ability to navigate very quickly through branches

    What Do Squirrels Eat?

so i was at school today and i saw a squirrel and i started to wonder if they eat bird eggs? i mean, its logical right? not every tree bears acorns or nuts, so if they didnt have food could they possibly eat bird eggs? What Do Squirrels Eat?
Unlike rabbits or deer, squirrels cannot digest cellulose and must rely on foods rich in protein, carbohydrates, and fat. Early spring is the hardest time of year for squirrels, since buried nuts begin to sprout and are no longer available for the squirrel to eat, and new food sources have not become available yet. During these times squirrels rely heavily on the buds of trees, in particular, those of the Silver Maple. Squirrels are omnivores; they eat a wide variety of plant food, including nuts, seeds, conifer cones, fruits, fungi, green vegetation, and insects. What Do Squirrels Eat?
yes squirrels do eat bird eggs as well as young rabbits too.

    at least in the north.

Urban squirrels have learned to get a great deal of food from over-generous humans. One of the more common and inexpensive foods fed to squirrels is peanuts. Recent studies however have shown that raw peanuts contain a trypsin inhibitor that prevents the absorption of protein in the intestines, therefore offering peanuts that have been roasted is the better option. However, wildlife rehabilitators in the field have noted that neither raw and roasted peanuts or sunflower seeds are good for squirrels, since they are deficient in several essential nutrients. This type of deficiency has been found to cause Metabolic Bone Disease, a somewhat common ailment found in malnourished squirrels
Ground squirrels inhabit most agricultural and rural areas of California. They are found around buildings, gardens, and industrial sites, as well as in nature. Ground squirrels damage many food-bearing and ornamental plants. Particularly vulnerable are all types of grains, and fruits and nuts such as almonds, apples, apricots, peaches, pistachios, prunes, oranges, tomatoes, %26amp; also walnuts. They also eat certain vegetables and field crops at seedling stage. Squirrels damage young shrubs, vines, and trees by gnawing bark, girdling trunks, eating twigs and leaves, and burrowing around roots. Squirrels even gnaw surface-type plastic irrigation pipe.
Nuts, seeds, wild fruit and berries are a large part of the diet of

squirrels. In winter, much of their diet is made up of hibernating insects

and their larvae found under the bark of trees; also the juicy buds of

    trees. But squirrels bury food in the ground, in preparation for winter;

one nut or acorn or seed in each hole. During the winter they seem to

locate these stores by smell, and dig them up.
Most squirrels eat nuts, seeds, grain, and fruit. By far their favorite food would be nuts, followed by sunflower seeds. Urban squirrel have adapted to eat just about anything, including pizza, luncheon meats and all forms of snack foods. Squirrels have been known to eat bird eggs, but this is a last resort. When natural food is scarce, they will eat anything they can find.

    *Hope This Helps*
I used to feed the squirrels in Central Park, and they ate everything! They would eat the bread crumbs that I had reserved for the birds, and they would eat my fried chicken too!

I started buying giant 5lb. bags of peanuts for the squirrels and bird seed for the birds and the squirrels would eat the bird seed too.

Members of the rat (rodent) family, they will eat anything. They're cute though. (smile)
Yes, squirrels eat birds eggs. Two things to remember. Squirrels are rodents and eggs are a great source of protein. Egg eating squirrels have been documented. Squirrels also eat mushrooms and insects. You have to remember acorns and hickory nuts are not available year round.
    ICE CREAM CONES!!

    True story:

Army mess halls have (or did 15 years ago) ice cream machines. You know the cheap nasty ice-milk soft serve ones.

In AIT (army school) there was a quad of buildings with grass and trees in the middle of it. Squirrels lived there. People would throw the ';end butt鈥檚 of ice-cream cones to the squirrels. After a while, they expected and enjoyed them.

I heard a scream as I was walking out of the mess hall.

A squirrel was not planning to wait for the ice-cream cone. He ran up this guys leg , up his body, out on his arm and snatched it out of his hand!

He screamed like a girl.. High falsetto and everything. He did a panic dance.

I about peed my pants laughing so hard, but then covered my own ice cream cone and walked a little faster to the barracks.
    They eat:

    Acorns

    Tommatos

    Apple

    Walnuts of tress

Some eat certain kinds of grass

    Mostly and friut.

Well a squirrl might eat an egg if it was laying there, like if someone threw it like to taste it and if they don't like it they most likely might spit it out.
guess they could, but the tree won't fight them for the nuts, and the bird would put up one heck of a brawl if it caught them eating the eggs. Also, they have a good memory so they can bury/hide nuts all over when they do find them and use them when they need them
I've not ever heard of a squirrel eating eggs, but it sounds plausible. We have lots of squirrels in our neighborhood and town. But we also have many, many pecan trees, oak trees and lots of growing things that squirrels like.
They are rodents. Therefore they are scavangers. Anything will be considered food for them, including a nest left unattended.

Is peanut butter safe for wild squirrels?

In moderation...real peanuts in shell are better since they can store them for later, or any other nut in shell that people can eat (chestnut, walnut etc) Most grocery store brands of peanut butter have a lot of other things in them besides peanuts. Is peanut butter safe for wild squirrels?
Yes, when I worked at a wildlife preserve they had activities for kids and they would make pine cones coated with peanut butter then rolled in bird seed, we never had any problems with the squirrels getting sick or dying. Is peanut butter safe for wild squirrels?
Yes, unless you use it to coat the trigger of a snap trap. Squirrels love it.
of course its just mashed up peanuts, they eat nuts don't they?

I have a problem with grey squirrels encroaching in to my flat. need a deterrent but dont want to kill them?
There are two ways that squirrels got in your flat...through the front door in which case dont leave it open. Squirrels are good jumpers and if your window faces a tree they will jump in and in which case...dont leave the window open. Using humane traps wont solve the problem because after they are released...they will come back looking for scraps of food.
Change the locks on the door
You can buy humane squirrel traps ,once you've caught them take them a mile or so away and release them, most pet shops will be able to get you one.
I am afraid ANF (above) has got it right. No time for sentiment, they need killing. They are no better than rats and of course they have almost decimated our native red squirrels. If you catch them and let them go elsewhere you are just passing on the problem to somebody else.
Grey squirrels are vermin and carry all kinds of diseases. They damage trees and other vegetation so kill them as quickly as you can. They are as verminous as rats. Kill them.

Where can i find the demon i need to fight to save the druid of agriculture please? How do i get to the squirrels in the Highlands please?Aveyond Help - druid of agriculture and squirrels?
The demon is located in a cave behind Velgard's cottage, which is located in the southeast section of the Highlands. The gate behind the cottage is locked, however, and you must speak to Velgard, who will give you a quest to find his glass eye. It was stolen by his brother who is currently hiding out down south in the Lowlands. After you've retrieved his magical glass eye, Velgard will open the back gate and you can access the cave to search for the demon.

Velgard's thieving brother is in the Mystery Manor, located just west of Oldwoods and accessible via the Sandstone Caverns near the Gentle Childrens School.

As for the Militant Squirrels, their headquarters is almost directly west of Velgard's Cottage. A sign out front reads, 'GO AWAY!' You can't miss it.

Well, some folks actually hunt them just for sport. They are quick little buggers, so for someone who isn't that skilled, it is a pretty good practice-target.

BUT some folks actually eat squirrel meat.

There really isn't a lot of meat on the animal, but still, you will find that there are a lot of folks who enjoy the flavor.
I do hate when lung shot squirrels start bleeding like that. I quit hunting with a shotgun years ago, and use only my Ruger 10/22 or Mark III pistol with CCI Stingers of Velocitors. I take head/neck shots only.

Squirrels are tasty, but the big fox squirrels are tough. I pressure cook them and then debone the meat and make jambalaya or squirrel sauce picante.
Okay.. listen.. go get you a black mouth cur dog, maybe two.

train them to tree squrriels and then shoot you a few.

    Most Fun EVER!

Then google how to clean a squirrel.

the easiest way is to cut there back above the tail then stand on the tail and pull the flab of skin. cut offf the head feet, and tail, then gut em.

Then you go and fry them suckers. best eatin ever!
    Useless??

Tell that to all the people that survived on small game after the large game was hunted out.

I eat squirrel as does everyone in my family. I would hardly call them useless.

Blood came out of its nose... and?? You mean to tell me blood doesn't come out of the other animals you hunt?
    Squirrel and dumplings. mmmmmmm

If we didn't hunt squirrels, we would be overrun with them. There have been times in US history where bounties have been placed on them as they reached near plague populations.

You need a couple to make a good pot. Skin them and cut them into quarters. Prepare them just as you would chicken.
They are quite tasty. I like making stir fry w/ em. You just need a few to get enough to feed a family. My ma has an old Amish cookbook. In it is a recipe calling for 100 squirrels!

When you shoot stuff blood comes out. Duh...

Birds usually poop on a car, when there is a cat hiding under it. You can tell who is a cat owner sometimes, just by looknig at the number of white streaks on the car.

I imagnie that birds and squirrels do not pick at your truck because it is mostly made of hard metal and glass parts, and it contains no visible food items or anything within reach that could be used to build a nest.

Birds are not stupid. I've seen them use cars for shade in a parking lot.
yes they move, have a auto sitting for a long time the trunk open and hood just enough for them to enter and you will see they will nest.
I don't think birds are scared of cars. I do think that birds don't like cars, cuz they like to sh!t on them.
    smell?

and a little i think it adapted as part of instinct to stay away.
Bite your tongue!! I'm having bird issues here with my truck that's parked out on the drive way.. they DO peck it! and I can't think of anything I can do to keep them away from it! URG!!!!

[breath in... breath out... breath in... breath out.... count to ten....] Ok, I'm good now. lol :)
Because cars and trucks dont look like worms and nuts....lol...no, its for the same reason you don't perch on limbs...its not natural!
Probably because they know that a house remains stationary as opposed to a car that moves and can crush the living feces out of them
    Payback is a byotch !!!
No food source. Therefore, no interest.
I don't understand why you expect birds and squirrels to destroy your car? Animals don't tend to destroy anything if it is not bothering them.
They're probably picking for grit on your roof (birds eat teeny tiny pebbles to help them digest their food) as your shingles are covered with grainy little stones. Since your car doesn't have rocks or bugs or anything else of interest, they're not going to pick at it. Just maybe use it as a perch to sit on.

    Help with baby squirrels?

Ok, someone gave me 3 baby squirrels. I think they're maybe around 1-2 weeks old. I've used a syringe to feed them. But how much do they eat when they're that little ?

Also, do they need a heat lamp or a heating pad in with them ? ( any info will be helpful)

Any information will be appreiciated. Thanks.Help with baby squirrels?
Here's a link for you.Everything you need to know.Make sure to stimulate them to go potty by gently rubbing their genital area with a damp cotton ball after each feeding~ VERY important!

    http://www.geocities.com/crawdadcreekreh鈥?/a>Help with baby squirrels?
call your local vet. There are special wildlife refuges that will take them and have special training for the babies. They will keep them alive without human contact which is VERY important for their survival after they are set free.
Take them to a wildlife rehab center. You can find one through nwrawildlife.org

Squirrels are wild animals. They are not pets. To attempt to care for them yourself would be unethical and illegal.
Do not attemt to raise these animals yourself. They are wild animals, and it is illegal to keep them unless you have the proper licenses.

Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. You can find one here: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contact.鈥?/a>

These people have the specialized training to care for sick, injured and orphaned wild animals. They also have the required state and federal licenses that allow them to keep the wild animals until they are healthy enough to be released back into the wild.

Do not take the squirrels to a vet - vets are for pets and most do not have the expertise to care for wild animals. Nor do most vets have the proper licenses that allow them to keep wild animals. They would just have to turn the squirrels over to a licensed rehabber anyway.

Please do not go online and get info on how to raise these babies yourself. As with everything today, information is widely available. That does not make it legal.
i know right, why do you have baby squirrels, they wild animals, shouldnt professionals do this
If you do not have the proper permit to rear them, do as the lady says and contact your state wildlife people about getting them to someone trained to get them back to the wild.

If not, expect to be fined when they do find out and come to get them.

    Dog obsessed with squirrels?

I can't take my dog outside w/o a leash anymore, not even to the backyard, because if she sees a squirrel she goes running and won't come back when she is called. Any suggestions on how to help control this behaviour?Dog obsessed with squirrels?
The breed of dog you have is mostly to blame. A cattle dog is a herding dog (I have a Sheltie, another herding dog.) and they are infamous for chasing and trying to wrangle any other animal in view.

My dog actually has a similar problem with squirrels. She's pretty well-trained and comes inside when I call her, but when she spots a squirrel, there's no way I can get her back in until she's ready -- unless I go out back and get her on the leash and bring her in myself.

It's not really a problem, though. I think it's pretty cute. Just keep your pup on the leash -- problem solved.Dog obsessed with squirrels?
Some dogs just have a high prey drive, my labX is the same way. My lab has an even higher drive for food though, so when I have her off leash (on the off leash trails around here) I always have treats with me, if she spots a squirrel and wants to chase it I call her to me and give her a treat. This seems to work for us. Hope you find something that works for your dog too.
If your backyard is fenced in, then there really is no harm in letting the dog chase the squirrel, its great exercise and a very natural behavior! My dog has been chasing squirrels all his life and has probably caught 2--he loves the chase! Anyway, if your dog doesnt come when she's called, because she sees a squirrel or what have you, she probably should be on a leash whenever she's not in an enclosed area, its unsafe otherwise. Good luck!
omg my dog has the same problem! shes a boxer. she hates squirrels, she goes running to wherever they are and chases them. we usually just yell at her and hold her back saying ';noo, bad dog'; and she wont do it. if we say the word squirrel, she knows what were saying and runs into the backyard looking for them.
Put the dog on a leash. You CANNOT control this behavior.
Our lab mix does this, he hears the word squirrel and he's off looking for one... until we fenced in the yard, we took him out on a leash only, so he wouldnt run.
Some dogs simply cannot abide squirrels. I have resorted to shooting the rodents out of the tree so he could eat them . He loved it.
We had a dog years ago who went crazy over squirrels. Depends on the breed, she was part poodle. They were bred to catch mice and small animals, it their nature.
You can't..its a natural instinct. Don't worry....your dog will probably never catch one. And squirrels are notorious for teasing dogs. We have one in our yard that will run around a tree for ever just so the dog will follow. They will do it just above where the dog could jump. Its hysterical to watch.
You need to teach your dog the command ';Leave it';.

Take him on a leach outside on a walk, and when he gets distracted (by a squirrel or anything else) tell him ';Leave it'; and give a tug on the leash.

You can also install an invisible fence, or a regular fence so that the dog can't leave.

Rats, mice or squirrels in my walls? ?

At night I am awaken by scratching noises and ';squealling'; sounds. I thought it would be mice, but my parents said they don't make that much noise. Any advice?

I haven't found droppings in the house, so far. Rats, mice or squirrels in my walls? ?
rule of thumb for me has always been noises at night usually are rats...during the day squirrels (there are exceptions such as flying squirrels are nocturnal..nesting squirrels can be making some noises at night at times) if mice population is high enough where you can hear them squealing, there would be plenty of other evidence around that they are the problem. My guess is rats.

would need an inspection to know for sure what you have...need to see droppings...trail size in the insulation where the rub markings are..even know what part of the country you are at to know what possible wildlife you have aroundRats, mice or squirrels in my walls? ?
Last year we heard squealing sounds in bathroom ceiling and it turned out to be a family of ermine (mink). Any scratching/squealing you're hearing is likely nesting moms and newborns of some rodent variety. Our ermine found other accommodations after we found the place they got in and fixed it. This year we had mice. After we fixed the place where they got in, we caught them in a Hav-a-Heart trap and released them back into the wild.

Hope you'll consider addressing your problem in a humane and non-poisonous manner. Best of luck!
You can buy poisoned bait, which should be sprinkled onto a piece of paper or a paper plate so you can remove uneaten bait easily and safely. Be sure to keep pets and children away from the bait. If signs of mice still persist after three weeks, resort to traps. Humane traps capture mice alive in a cage or box, enabling you to deposit them elsewhere. Or you can use spring-loaded traps.
For rats and mice place a few bait traps around the exterior of your home. Tomcat is a brand here that is popular. The critters eat it and then seek water which takes them away from their nest to die.

If you can find their entry point, wait until you've had a few quiet nights and then seal it with expanding foam.
Call an exterminator, the electronic repeller we have doesn't work at all. Rat traps if you can find where they are getting into the wall.
Use the Riddex Plus, plug in rodent deterrent. They'll leave.

  • Why do squirrels bury their nuts?

Squirrels are getting ready for winter. They are looking for nuts and seeds, digging holes or finding crevices in tree trunks. That's where they store the food they'll need during the coming months, when the weather is cold and snowy.

Eastern gray, fox, and red squirrels are some of the most common squirrels in many parts of the country. Eastern gray squirrels also can be black. Fox squirrels are brown to reddish brown. They are the biggest and bushiest of this group. Red squirrels tend to be the smallest.

    Red Squirrel

    Eastern Gray Squirrel

    Fox Squirrel

Squirrels spend a lot of time in trees, which are like restaurants for them. Among their favorite things to eat are nuts and other parts of tree, like tender buds. Red squirrels prefer eating pine cones and nuts. Squirrels may also eat corn, insects and other animals. And as anyone who has a bird feeder knows, squirrels love birdseed.

Gray, fox, and red squirrels stay active all winter, so they need a supply of food for energy. Gray and fox squirrels tend to bury food underground, piece by piece. Red squirrels may gather food into piles that they put at the base of trees or bury underground.

When they need the food, the squirrels use memory and smell to help them find what they buried. Sometimes, you'll even see them digging through the snow.

Squirrels make nests in trees, either in the branches or inside holes in the trunks. Some squirrels spend much of the winter in underground tunnels, where it's warmer.

When spring comes, squirrels switch their food preferences to new plant growth, like buds and leaves.

Sometimes they forget to dig up all the buried nuts. That's why you'll sometimes find a tree seedling growing in a place where no one planted it.Why do squirrels bury their nuts?
storage thats why u see them digging around trying to find them they forget where they put some of them and thats how alot of oak trees get plantedWhy do squirrels bury their nuts?
They have to store them in a place they can get to in the winter. nuts don't grow in the winter, and they have to survive.
They are hoping that it will grow and then they will have many nuts.
they do that so they will have enough food for the winter.
To get to the other side.
in order to store them in a safe place. Buried under the ground, those nuts will remain fresh and without mold...

Has anyone ever heard of putting crushed red pepper in bird feed to keep squirrels out?

    Yes, cayenne pepper is used.

This is because only mammals, have the taste buds that can taste hot spice's. Birds are unaffected, they have no idea the cayenne pepper is mixed in with the seed.

Mankind and birds are the only animals (insects not withstanding) that purposely eat hot peppers.

The hot peppers do not affect the birds in anyway, except health wise for the vitamins.

The efficacy of capsaicin-treated sunflower seed as a repellent to birdseed

    consumption by free-ranging Gray squirrels.

    Dr. Joseph A. Dunn

Cornell Cooperative Extension, Department of Natural Resources

Cornell University, Ithaca, New York 14853

    Abstract

Eastern gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) are considered to be a pest by many bird-lovers because they can steal significant quantities of seed from birdfeeders. None of the available methods of protecting birdseed against squirrels is completely effective. We assessed the efficacy of treating birdseed with capsaicin oleoresin as a means of deterring squirrels. Consumption of treated and untreated whole black-oil sunflower seed was compared by carrying out one-choice feeding trials at three sites near Ithaca, New York from 11 May to 24 June 1999. Untreated seed was provided in weeks 1, 2 and 4 and capsaicin-treated seed was offered in weeks 3, 5 and 6.

It was concluded that treating the sunflower hearts with capsaicin while keeping the shell intact does effectively deter squirrels from eating the seed. The use of this seed provides a solution to the problem of squirrels stealing seed from bird feeders, making this a commercially viable product. We also showed that this treatment of seed has no noticeable effect on the frequency of bird visits where bird populations are low, and may increase visit frequency where bird populations are high. This would further enhance the marketability of this seed

The cayenne pepper responce is correct. Also, my African Grey loves hot spicy foods, she also likes crushed red pepper seeds. The seeds are in her daily seed balls.
Joker 1 has a theory that birds don't have taste buds. Well I have first hand knowledge that by sprinkling pieces of bread with Tabasco sauce and tossing them out to sea gulls. They would swallow these morsels and then dive into fresh water puddles to cool their throats. So if you want to drive birds away from your feeders that's the way to do it. The best way to keep squirrels away is to tack sheets of aluminum or tin around the tree trunk or pole that houses the feeder. The squirrels cannot dig their claws into the aluminum therefore cannot climb to the bird feeder.
That's mean. It would burn the bird's throats. Of course having an outside cat or two would keep both away.
I used Cayenne Pepper not crushed pepper. I was told dont know how true this is or not but birds dont have a taste bud for ';hot/spicy'; but squirrels do. I tried it mixed enough Cayenne pepper so it lightly covered the seeds and the squirrels stopped eating the seeds and killing the baby birds that came to feed there but the birds kept on eating without any problems.
i have parrots and i was told they like spicy peppers so i tried it. my african grey cant get enough of it. jalapenos, cayenne, etc he loves them and doesnt run looking for water. i dont give him too many, but they dont bother him.
It will probably keep the squirrels AND the birds out.
That's a good way to kill the birds.

You'll have to put wire around the bird feeder so the birds can fit their beaks through the wire to eat.

Squirrels do not hibernate and remain active throughout the winter, there is usually a ready supply of food for them during the winter months. Their activity is not much affected by cold weather, but on very wet days they will stay inside their dreys to keep dry.
they fly south for the winter!!!

They go to the same nests that they are in during the summer. They arent out as much in the winter and in February they start having their young. I have a student who thinks squirrels have 2 legs. I'm trying to explain to her that the front legs count as legs, not arms. Can you help clarify?Do squirrels have 2 legs or 4 legs?
    4. When they move they use four....

It is an interesting question because chimps have 2 legs but when they move they use their knuckles...

When the squirrel runs he has his full front digits extended and in contact with the ground...Do squirrels have 2 legs or 4 legs?
well, since they walk on them, they are considered legs. but if you look at the joints, the front ones are elbows, technically making them arms. but normally, we consider appendages that are walked on to be legs. (look at gorillas, though. they often walk on all four, but they have arms)

it just depends on how technical you want to be.

the elephant is the only animal that truly has 4 legs.

Well, what if they were on the ground to begin with?
If they are in a tree when they die, then yes, they will fall to the ground, unless a limb catches them on the way to the ground.

They lose muscle control like we would, and therefore, have no choice but to fall.

Do squirrels live in holes like chipmunks?

Squirrels typically build nests in trees (they look bigger and ';messier'; than birds' nests) or use holes in trees. Some species of ground squirrel do burrow in the ground, however.Do squirrels live in holes like chipmunks?
yesDo squirrels live in holes like chipmunks?
Yes, There are species of ground squirrels who live in burrows like chipmunks. The species Spermophilus tridecemlineatus (the thirteen lined ground squirrel) even has striped and spotted pellage like a chipmunk, but they are larger and have a longer bushier tail.

The common tree squirrels everyone else has mentioned live in trees, but yes, there do exist ground squirrels who live in burrows.
    i think so
    they build nests in trees
    maybe..
some do, but mostly build nests in trees out of leaves, twigs and anything else they find. in the fall or early winter, if you look up , through all the bare trees, you can see the nests all over. Others, also live in ';bird house'; type homes, ...i have one in the back yard, its an actual squirrel house, looks like a birdhouse, yet the holes..;are made a bit differently, ...and size and shape as well.
    no. they live in tress.
They live in any wooded areas. Mainly trees, I guess. Yeah.
yes sir squriles and chipmunkks are practically cuzs they both live in holes bu some squirrles live in trees
Not really, they make nests of leaves and grass in the forks of trees. They will den up in hollow trees if a wood pecker has made a hole to the interior. They will make dens in old wood pecker nests. They are a creature of opportunity like most rodents and will move in to any vacated space.
Squirrels build nests in trees these are known as 'Dreys'
    they live in your attic
There are many types of squirrels. The chipmunk is one of them. Some live in holes in the ground, some live in nests in trees. The nests in trees are often inside hollow trunks or holes in the limbs, but they do build nests of leaves and sticks in the branches.
Not all squirrels do. In fact, some live in hollow trees or nests while others live on the ground such as the ground squirrel which live in bushy areas. Some also live in the mountains of South America.
no they live inside tree and nest, they don't go underground
    i think so...google it....
    no
nope, they make nests in the trees, mostly out of sticks and leaves, and whatever else they're little claws can get into....

during the fall they are easy to see....
    yes
nope. they live up in the sky.
No squirrels are to stupid to do that they just run around and get splattered by cars.
    nope they live in trees.

I was just asking a question because my cousin has 2 new baby squirrels and wanted info!?

and i did not know that this was the Reptile section!!I was just asking a question because my cousin has 2 new baby squirrels and wanted info!?
Did your cousin find these squirrels outside? If the answer is yes, get them to a wildlife rehabilitator immediatly. Squirrels need to grow up around other squirrels, and cannot be tamed. They may seem cute now, but they make awful pets as adults, and eventually turn vicious on their owners.I was just asking a question because my cousin has 2 new baby squirrels and wanted info!?
there a kind of wld animals they don,t like live in cage

I saw this eastern European guy on TV saying that a woman's brains is the same size a squirrels, is he right?

Yes, Borat Sagdiyev is a very knowledgable man! Kazakhstan government scientist Dr. Yamak have prove this.I saw this eastern European guy on TV saying that a woman's brains is the same size a squirrels, is he right?
What, you mean10 times larger than yours?I saw this eastern European guy on TV saying that a woman's brains is the same size a squirrels, is he right?
The chap who said it must have been a squirrel.
You really must learn the difference between comedy and documentary.
your brain is obviously the size of a squirrels if you even thought he could be right....
A Womans brains is the same size as a mans brain. THe difference is women use the creative side of thier brain more then men do wich actually makes us smarter then most men, don't believe me ask any woman!!!!
oh my god that is a stupid question corse it aint the same size, if they are then mens brains must be tiny

no offence to the brighter men out there
no, he sounds like an ill-informed chauvinist.

Our brains are only slightly smaller than a male's, doesn't mean we carry less information though! On average, a brain will weigh about 3 pounds.
    OMG!!!That,s why i like nuts!!!
Nice try a** hat! You thought you would come on here and rile us all up with your chauvinism. Are you bored? Do you not have any friends to go and bother? Piss off!
yes well it would be from an eastern European MAN!

  • Dog obsessed with squirrels?

Why do squirrels bury their nuts?

This would further enhance the marketability of this seed

http://www.napa.ufl.edu/2001news/peppers鈥?/a>Has anyone ever heard of putting crushed red pepper in bird feed to keep squirrels out?
Doesn't that keep the birds out, too?Has anyone ever heard of putting crushed red pepper in bird feed to keep squirrels out?

    Good luck

Where do squirrels go in the winter?

From the looks of it to my yard to steal food from my birdfeeders.Where do squirrels go in the winter?
they go to the treesWhere do squirrels go in the winter?
They're still there. Squirrels don't hibernate. You may be confusing them for cats. The squirrels around my house eat so much food leading up to winter, that the look like small, fat cats. Loud thumps when they jump from a tree onto my roof.
Squirrels do not hibernate and remain active throughout the winter, there is usually a ready supply of food for them during the winter months. Their activity is not much affected by cold weather, but on very wet days they will stay inside their dreys to keep dry.
they fly south for the winter!!!
    Underground to comfort their nuts
They go to the same nests that they are in during the summer. They arent out as much in the winter and in February they start having their young. They build their nest out of leaves and twigs in the forks of the branches of the trees, in holes in trees and in hollow trees. Yep they are very good at raiding the birdfeeders in the winter.

    Plagued by squirrels!?

We are trapping so many that we are running out of recipes. Since the canning books are silent on the topic, does anyone have a good way to “put them up” for the winter? Also, are conventional tanning methods effective on the pelts?”Plagued by squirrels!?
What are feeding your squirrels? I just use corn as a bait for the trap and can not get as much as you do. The pelts are tanned just like any other animal pelt you just have to use smaller tools. If you are really good you can sell the pelts on eBay as fox and those buyers will never know. As for canning

the ideas are endless, squirrel instead of beef in beef bourgouine ,squirrel instead of turkey in turkey tetterzine, you get the idea.

I just have to keep the dogs out of the hunting area otherwise they scare the squirrels off. Also I have found the corn I use, type and quantity will effect the amount of squirrels I acquire.Plagued by squirrels!?

If you are harvesting more than you can use, then stop harvesting them until you run out of your current supply.

  • Are squirrels active and seeking nuts in the winter?

Squirrels remain active the whole year. In the winter they are scrounging around on the ground for nuts and digging up some they buried earlier. You will see them mostly digging up nuts. Somehow it seems they can smell them because I don't really believe they can remember where all those they buried. In one day they buried two gallons of pecans. Maybe they're planning for their future because I see a lot of pecan tree seedlings growing around the place. Are squirrels active and seeking nuts in the winter?

Do squirrels have 2 legs or 4 legs?

You can say ';Sweetie they have 4 legs, now quit being like your mother';.
i am right just so you know. squirrels do have 2 legs and ducks do too. the superstar question is bad

    Mr.Brown you where right!

Can you buy squirrels for pets?

i really want one and if you can how would you go about getting oneCan you buy squirrels for pets?
yes its possable and not illegal but you may need a licence

heres a website on squirrels and other things

http://animal-world.comCan you buy squirrels for pets?
You can keep lots of things as pets, yes I'm sure there is some type of squirrel that you can keep for a pet. I have seen people with chipmunks and flying squirrels. But FIRST what you would have to do is figure out whether it is even LEGAL in your area for you to own one. After you found out that you would have to do lots of research on exotic pets to figure out if you have the time and patience to take care of an exotic animal. Then you would have to find a good breeder of the animal, and fork over probably very large amounts of money for one.
    are you for real?

squirrels like koala bears look lovely and cuddly ,,,they are rodents and very vicious they should be treated with extreme caution,,,,,their razor teeth (which they have to use constantly,to keep the length down)will tear your fingers to shreds and also your curtains,chairs,settees...

invite a lion into your home you are less likely to regret it
I think you could do with lessons on both tame and wild Animals. Squirrels are wild, so do not think of putting one in a cage. If you do, you want reporting to the RSPCA. buy yourself a proper pet, Dog, Cat. There are plenty of those that need a home.Or visit the Dogs Homes where you could find plenty there.
    Squirrels are wild animals.

You can train them to come to you for food, but don't even think about taking one into the house. They will cause havoc!!!! My friend had been feeding one, it used to come to her garden every day for food. It got in her house and ripped her cushions and curtains to shreds.
You could buy a Chipmunk. very similar to a squirrel.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chipmunk

    http://super-chipmunks.co.uk/
No, I don't think you can buy squirrels. They're too wild to be kept as pets. But if you want one really bad then why don't you go catch one yourself?
Squirrels. Best place for them is bbq.
    are you mad

    What do baby squirrels eat?

We found a baby squirrel in the park. The poor thing was being terrorized by a bunch of kids, so we brought it home with us. My mother called to check if our local SPCA was open, but it's not, so we'll be having him for the night. What should we give him? I honestly can't even estimate age or anything, and we WON'T be keeping him, just renting out cage space until the SPCA is open tomorrow morning. What do baby squirrels eat?
go get some puppy or kitten milk replacer from the pet store and a nursing bottle. What do baby squirrels eat?
it really depends on the age if its eyes are open and its tail is a little bushy it would still be on milk but would be starting to eat solid food. So if you are going to only have him for the night then you can just give him some pecans or smashed banana or a small piece or tomato. If you have a syringe or a shallow dish at your house you can put some scalded cow milk(just stick a bit in the microwave for 45 seconds then let it cool down) these things should hold it over till tomorrow. no need to good spend your money on things you don't have. now if you are going to keep it then there is a totally different way you are going to do it, but the things i list will be fine for the night. Remember to keep it warm, if you have a heating pad put it under some towels for it to sleep on if not put a hot water bottle where it is sleeping. and every once in a while take a warm tissue and wipe its bum to help it potty. Hope this helped.if you decide to keep it check out this site it will tell you everything you need to know http://users.hal-pc.org/~jbsum/squirrel.鈥?/a>
well Don't know what they eat, but I think releasing a baby squirrel into the wild is not a good choice, I mean it is a good choice, but it's not going to be accepted by it's mother or other squirrels... because they can probably smell the human scent... but I am NOT 100% about it

it's kinda like a hamster killing their young sometimes when you touch the baby

but god bless you for saving him

Do male flying squirrels leave their mates when young are concieved?

In the wild, the squirrels mate, and then they leave. The female will chase the male squirrel away when she is ready to have babies, because she doesn't want the male to kill her babies. Squirrels will eat eggs and baby birds, and the mom squirrel doesn't want the same thing to happen to her kids.Do male flying squirrels leave their mates when young are concieved?

  • I just heard squirrels fight on my roof. What do you think they were fighting about?

This time of year is difficult to say, but I found this little scribbled list...............

    12 goals before Christmas

    1. Light bulbs and wires strung on any roof must be chewed, enough to get someone up on the ladder and check out each and every inch of all 500'.

    2. Consume the plastic bird (squirrel)feeders, you replace, repeat!

    3. A beautiful pine cone wreath tied up with a bow, hung on the door just so....... is an invitation to call every squirrel in the neighborhood for an extra treat.

    4. There's a stash of acorns blocking the rain gutter!

    5. For all the times that yippy dog chased us up a tree, we're gonna chase him when he comes out to pee.

    6. The wood shingles on the roof taste good.

    7. Attic is the new baby nursery.

    8. Patio umbrella, nice nesting material-waterproof too.

    9. Goldfish fountain is noisy, eat the triple coated electrical cord.

    10. Tired of corn. The striped sunflower seed is history!

11.Since you cut down our favorite walnut tree, we invited rats to nest in the old Corvette.

    12. If the kid with the BB gun doesn't move out, we are going to gnaw the DSL and Directv wires.I just heard squirrels fight on my roof. What do you think they were fighting about?
they were fighting trying to decide who gets to whoop the cats azz.I just heard squirrels fight on my roof. What do you think they were fighting about?

we have a black squirrel in our neighborhood. Just one too. My brother named him Earl and he says Earl is a mafia leader because.....my brother was riding his bike and the squirrel ran at him most likely making a hit. sometimes we see the squirrel fighting with others and we think it's a roughing up between two gangs.

Is a .223 overkill for rabbits and squirrels?

Yes it is. And you need to bear in mind most states have a ban on shooting small game with a centerfire rifle in order to help prevent deer poaching.Notice I said most states. Is a .223 overkill for rabbits and squirrels?
    yes

    deff. not for squirrels

but yet, in some places the rabbits get BIG

really, the best caliber for rabbits and squirrels is a .22 or a shotgun (don't remember the best load needed)

me, personally, wouldn't take either with a .223 because, to me, that is just too big of a caliber for such a small animal. Is a .223 overkill for rabbits and squirrels?
You don't say what gun you are shooting. If it is a bolt action, or some semi-auto which you can easily work the action manually to shoot a very much reduced load which will not cycle the action by itself, then Speer has a reload for you!

They quote the Accurate Powder Co. XMP-5744 powder designed for reduced charges in cases like the 223 Rem, at 11.0 grains for a 55 grain bullet at 1885 fps, and the same powder charge for all lighter bullets as well at slightly higher velocity. Still this is 430 ft-lbs of energy, about like a 45 Colt. But the full load is 1200 ft-lb, which is almost 3 times as much snort.

Personally, if you can use reduced loads like this, I think the 223 becomes a nice knock-around gun, not that anyone should knock on things with it!

    Just an idea. Regards, Larry.
That's the first question today that made me laugh out loud. Not because it's a stupid question (it's not), but because I'm picturing exploding rabbits and squirrels.

Yes, it's too big. In a survival situation, though, you could take head shots and not mess up any meat. The head of a rabbit or squirrel hit with a .223 will not likely be found.
A couple of years ago, I had the fun of shooting over a prairie dog town in N.M. with a .223. I had hollow points and nylon tipped ammo. When I hit them, they would literally explode. I ran out of soft tip ammo and switched over to ball ammo. They still exploded.

Use a .22lr or a shotgun. 7 1/2 for rabbits (they have a thin skin) or a #6 for squirrels.
Yes. .223 rounds are designed for varmint hunting where meat destruction isn't an issue. For something like squirrels or rabbits you'll waste a lot of meat unless you limit yourself to head-shots. You'd probably be better of with a gun chambered in .22LR and using .22 hollow-points.
    * Absolutely beyond overkill.* 22 long Rifle is all you need to use.* I hope you intend to eat these game animals, and are not just killing them for nothing and leaving them lay where they fall.*
Not at all. It goes straight in and out very cleanly and leaves the pelt relatively unharmed.

However, as mentioned above a .22 works just as good and you're not spending 50c every time you pull the trigger.
Yes it is. You could use it for jack rabbits that are way out there. Other wise stick with a 22 especialy if you want the meat.
If just for small stuff like that i would get a .22 LR just because the ammo is so cheap
I use mine for coyotes, depends on the distance you are shooting them from
No, its just overkill for the wallet.
It can be. Head shots can prove to save meat... Unless u eat the head.
yes if you plan on eating them.
    YES -
If u want to blow off there heads

I dreamed 2 black cats, 2 black squirrels, 2 black hamsters on my path, what does that mean? ?

To see numbers in a dream is good luck. The animals in your dream represent financial affairs.

The color black is a little tricky as it darkens the picture a bit.

If you are considering some kind of financial dealings right now or in the near future, I would suggest you approach it with care. Do your homework first.

If you make a informed decision about your finances. your luck will be twofold. If you are careless with your decision, your troubles will be twofold.

The financial choice is yours to make so make it with careful thought.I dreamed 2 black cats, 2 black squirrels, 2 black hamsters on my path, what does that mean? ?
There is not enough detail here. There is a theme of black and that would depend on how you perceive that colour. Do you find it threatening or a void or emptiness, what do you think of when you hear the word. How do you see cats, squirrels and hamsters? Do you see cats as hunters, sneaky or independent? Do you see squirrels as squirrel or gatherers or hibernators? Do you see hamsters as prey, or caged. Dreams can have many interpretations but the interpretations start with how you see things and the way you perceive them and what they were doing.
