Why do squirrels chew off the oak leaves?

Mostly to use in making their nests. These can be seen it the branches of the trees and vines in the area. Although made from leaves and small twigs these provide a warm, dry and relatively safe home for the squirrels.

Leaves transpire, the equivalent of humans perspiring. The leaves could be a source of water and minerals from the tree.
