Do squirrels growl or whine?

I see numerous squirrels hopping from the tree to my house and climbing all over the place. I open the attic door I hear growling, whining almost like a cat and clawing or digging sounds. I thought it sounded larger than a squirrel but maybe im wrong? Also do squirrels make growling or whining noises? What kind of animal do you think is up there?Do squirrels growl or whine?
Hi there...it's possible you have squirrels in your attack. Squirrel vocalizations include growling, barking/chirping, chattering, squeak and also buzz.

Chatter calls are often used: when a squirrel first emerges from its nest, when it returns to its territory, after caching food or feeding, and upon sighting an intruder. Barks are most often given in long series, sometimes lasting for several minutes up to an hour. Squeaks are given in response to a potential threat and increase in intensity if the threat does not diminish. They often progress into barking sessions. Growls are most commonly heard during chases and fights over territories or females. Squirrels caught in live traps will also growl when approached. The squeak and buzz calls are the first calls developed by juveniles and are used to call to their mother.

Also other animals who could possibly enter the attic are raccoons or opossums. From what you are describing in terms of the vocalizations would lead me to believe it's either squirrels or raccoons.Do squirrels growl or whine?
There are many mammals and birds that can find their way into attics, and most of them sound much larger than they are. If you are hearing squealing and scratching, you could have mice, rats, or even bats. But growling and loud scratching could mean squirrels, raccons or possum, among other critters.

You really need to get a nuisance wildilfe control professional (NOT an exterminater) to come and check this out for you. They will be able to humanely trap and remove the animals and relocate them back into the wild where they belong. They will also find all the spots where they had gained access to your attic, and give you recommendations on how to keep them from coming back. It is important that you do this, because a buildup of animal urine and feces can cause illness in you and family members, especially if there is anyone in your family with respiratory ailments.
Squirrels bark. they kinda sound like a very small dog.
