Why do squirrels bury their nuts this time of year?

To store them for the winter when there won't be much other food. They do not hibernate despite some people thinking they do-they just spend most of their time in their drey (squirrel nest high up a tree) during cold weather, only coming out a few times a day to dig up a few stored nuts. Why do squirrels bury their nuts this time of year?
Since winter is coming up squirrels are storing nuts as food to keep them through the winter.Just like us they get cold and so have to stay inside their shelter for the whole winter or for a long period of time. They store nuts inside little hiding places where they can take and go without having to freeze themselves to death and or having to go and get food as nuts dont grow in winter. Why do squirrels bury their nuts this time of year?
Just like you use your pantry a squirrel has to have a place to store his food for winter so when there is no other food sources because plants are dead or defoliated and the acorns are either under the snow or ice or other animals have eaten all of them like wild pigs, deer. raccoons and such. they will have enough food to survive the winter months.

Since its still warm enough to hunt for food, they do so and then when its really cold , they could just dig up their food
so they don't freeze off
they are going to hibernate and they bury the nuts to store food , they do this because in the winter there's no time to hunt or gather food and its too cold .
I bury my nuts at any time of the year.
