My Doxie boy is obsessed with squirrels!?

I often take walks with my mini doxie, and occasionally let him off-leash when on the back quiet country roads. But if he catches site of anything small and furry, he's gone. Is there any method that I can use to keep him nearby even when tempted to run after something? I know most of you will only tell me to keep the leash on him, but I enjoy trusting my dog and letting him wander in front or to the side of me without being completely restrained. My Doxie boy is obsessed with squirrels!?
Nothing that I can think of. That's what they were bred to do, chase and kill small animals. You could try teaching a really solid ';come'; command, but his instinct will probably be greater then training. You could try posting this in the dog section, you may get some more responses.

I keep getting attacked by squirrels...what do i do?

Everytime I go out to my backyard (which is edged by a forest) a squirrel attacks me. Seriously, I have scratches all over me from them. This has happened like six times. Is there anyway to keep them away from me?I keep getting attacked by squirrels...what do i do?
Stop being so nuts =)I keep getting attacked by squirrels...what do i do?
You might have to get in touch with an exterminator. If you don't want the animal killed, you should look for one that humanly traps animals and takes them else where to let them loose. Also, when the animal is caught, you might want to have them take it to a vet to make sure it doesn't have rabies because if this squirrel has scratched you and broke the skin, it could be rabid or have some other problem like parasites that could invade humans also. Surely this is unusual for a wild squirrel to attack you unless it has babies near your house and it is protecting them.
ur lucky, i wish i had squirrels that attacked me, so i could beat the sh*t outa them.

but just do what i would do, get a stick pretend its a sword, and start whacking them. (sorry, ima nerd) :P
well cant be afraid to walk in your own back yard, i say get a bowl, fill it with anti freeze cause its extra sweet so they'll drink it and it poisonous. theyll be droppin from the trees in no time
bring a machine gun with you next time you go out, and then as they get near you just blast them away.

or just stop going out into your backyard.
take a shop-vac with you %26amp; just suck 'em up... lol, seriously, try putting out some mothballs, most animals hate them. it keeps them %26amp; the coons out of my shed
Shoot them. A .22 would obliterate the lil s**t.
seriously?
hav a bowl next 2 u filled with tiny bits of apple nuts etc. and throw it into the forest everytime they come close
kill everyone
GET A FENCE.
attack them.
ROFL
keep away from their home

Why did Eve listen to talking tree snakes instead of talking squirrels?

Probably because if the squirrels could have talked in the Garden of Eden, they would have been more interested in conversations about where food was, rather than trying to flatter and trick a woman.

Can you see a squirrel telling a young lady that they should go and try to eat some of that forbidden fruit to gain knowledge?? No, but I could see the squirrel saying to Eve, ';come on, come on, let's go get that fruit'; and then the squirrel would have demanded all of the fruit for themselves!!Why did Eve listen to talking tree snakes instead of talking squirrels?
Eve is a fictional character. Why did Eve listen to talking tree snakes instead of talking squirrels?
My question is if you believe in the bible, and the bible never said that talking animals was normal, why didn't Eve freak out when the snake talked? And if we are to assume animals did talk, why did they stop talking? Can anyone else see how totally ridiculous this thought process is?
Because..';she loved talking with the snake. He made little sounds with his tongue. The snake made her feel good inside...';-Laurie Anderson the snake is just a metaphor, as with most of the older old testiment. Obviously it's about good vs. evil and snakes are the symbol of evil.

My theory: It represents oral sex and the snake was his penis and she wanted to take a bite of the apple on top but he thought it was wrong, or was afraid she would 'bite it'. After all -it's another way that ancient man blamed all his mistakes on listening to the woman. She took the fall or was thrown under the bus by those ancient wisemen who were trying to explain what 'IT' is all about.
Squirrely, I think it was the trouser snake that she was really after. ; )
LOL

Imagine the catastrophe if she DID listen to the talking squirrel.
Because fruit tastes better than acorns?
Because she knew the squirrel was nuts...she SHOULD have listened to God's Kitty.

Meows! =^-^=
Because the snake had a long hard tail, hehe
Because she was stupid - duh!! Only the Squirrel can lead us.
Satan posessed the snake....ugh you all know this

im letting out air
We'd all have been better off if she had, I'm sure. The squirrel would have told her to eat nuts, not fruit, and the nut tree was not forbidden.

Oh, well; maybe next time.
The squirrel was off with the moose ... the snake was all she had at the time.
If she had she might have eaten Adams nuts by mistake
Where's that talking donkey when you need him? We need Balaam to chime in!
rocky and bullwinkle didn't appear til after they left the garden
The squirrels put the snake up to it. Didn't want to lose their legs.

An army of genitically enhanced squirrels is forming outside of my house what to i do!!?

Call Acme inc and order a Genetically Enhanced Squirrel Ray. It should be there within five seconds of ordering and you can dispense with those squirrels freely and save the world. Good luck soldier! An army of genitically enhanced squirrels is forming outside of my house what to i do!!?
get a bb gun.....An army of genitically enhanced squirrels is forming outside of my house what to i do!!?
how do you know they're genetically enhanced? you should go chase them and scare them away and hope they don't come attack you!!
Is it a well-organized army, or a rag-tag army of squirrels? Your best bet would be to put together a make-shift squirrel costume (squirrels are smart, but pretty easy to fool), place a few medals on your chest, and a few stars on your shoulders. Walk out to the army, and announce yourself as a Squirrel General.

Good luck, soldier.
buy a paintball gun, and ... you know
call anti-pesto (wallace %26amp; gromitt) they will know what to do with them just dont kill them!!

  • Squirrels, rabbits and rats as food?

They are a problem now in the UK. So why do we not eat them? Lots of recipes for rabbit but how do I prepare and cook squirrel and rat. My first attempt at eating rat was not to good, it was a stringy meat but then I only microwaved it. If I knew how to cook them properly maybe they would be OK.

The cookery books are no good, just the same things all the time, no guide to cooking different meats..Squirrels, rabbits and rats as food?
    Hi there,

Below I have typed two honest-to-God recipes I have in a book full of recipes from the southern United States, where people do eat squirrels on occasion. I've never tried it. As far as rats, I'm not sure that would be a good idea to try. They can carry lots of diseases and are rather dirty animals because they eat garbage and dead things alot. %26gt;:P

    Broiled Squirrel

Squirrel is one of the finest and tenderest of all wild meats. It's flavor is mild, rarely gamey. There is no need for soaking, and seldom any need for parboiling. They should be cleaned as soon as possible after shooting, but skinning may wait until they're ready to be cooked. Clean squirrels and rub with salt and pepper. Brush with fat and place on a hot broiling rack. Broil 40 minutes, turning frequently and basting with drippins every 10 minutes. Serve with gravy from drippins and season with 1 to 2 tablespoons of lemon juice.

    Fried Squirrel

Make sure all the hair is cleaned off the squirrel. Cut it up. If it's old and tough, put it in the pressure cooker for about 15-20 minutes. Salt and Pepper it. Cover with flour and fry in a cast iron skillet on a medium fire until brown and tender. This is a real sweet meat. You can smother a squirrel just like a chicken.

Enjoy.Squirrels, rabbits and rats as food?
Rats carry disease and are pretty nasty. There is a reason why they are considered to be vermin.

Squirrel and rabbit, on the other hand, are excellent food sources, both low in fat and high in protein.

    SQUIRREL/RABBIT/CHICKEN SMOTHER FRIED

Both squirrel and rabbit can be cooked the same way. Cut up into pieces as you would chicken. Mix flour, salt, and pepper in a shallow dish. Dredge the pieces of meat in the mixture then drop into hot oil, about 1/2'; oil in a large skillet. Cook over medium heat until the underside browns, turn over and cook other side. Remove meat from skillet to platter. Pour off all but about 2 T of the fat and residue in the skillet. Add 1/4 c. flour to drippings, stir over medium heat until brown. Add 2 c. milk/water mixture, a little at a time, stirring constantly til all is incorporated. Add meat, cover, turn down to simmer and simmer about 30- 45 minutes until meat is succulently tender. Great over rice!

Time saving version: brown meat as indicated, remove from skillet, pour off oil into tin can and discard. Add 1 can cream of mushroom soup and a can of water to skillet, add meat. Bring to boil, stir, cover, lower heat to simmer, cook as indicated.
I know some people eat rats but don't think I'll be one of them, however squirrel and rabbit are good. We make squirrel dumplings, stew or boil squirrel, remove from cooking liquid to cool, reserve liquid, mix 2 cups self rising flour with 1/4 cup oil and 1 cup milk, re heat reserved liquid and add meat picked from squirrel, 2 tablespoons of butter, 1 cup milk and enough water to have room to cook dumplings, bring liquid to a boil and drop dumplings by teaspoons, add dumplings until liquid is thickened. turn to low and cook for about 20 minutes until dumpling are done inside when cut. enjoy
Typically, you want to cook meat until a meat thermometer reaches 150 degrees F in the center.

However, there are recipes for these meats. YouTube has many mini cooking shows people put up, including for these meats.

    Rabbit: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_qu鈥?/a>

    Squirrel: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_qu鈥?/a>

Rat (I found only one for a large rat in the Louisiana called ';Nutria';): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuXEaNdwr鈥?/a>
Don't eat rat, they are scavengers and eat poop and rotten things. Squirrel meat is good, it can be cooked like rabbit, pan seared or stewed. Lots of recipes out there for it.
OMG DO NOT EAT RAT!!!! JUST KILL THE $#%%26amp;*@$!!!!

As far as rabbit and squirrell I know people that eat them. Just look up sites that are about eating wild game.
didn't you pay attention in history your people got the bubonic plague from eating rats.
This is a joke question, Right! Rabbits are fine, but Rats and squirrels are just nasty. How low can you go!

No, squirrils are fast and always alert. I wouldn't even make them shy.

And it also depends on where the squirril is, like if its a large forest then the squirril might not know.

Why do Squirrels spin their tales?

    They're born storytellers.

Or did you mean ';tails';?Why do Squirrels spin their tales?
It's a squirrels sign that something is not right in the area. Often they will do it when humans are around, so they spin their tales to notify other squirrels in the area that something isn't right and to be on the alert. You'll see them do it when hawks are around too.Why do Squirrels spin their tales?
What Tiny and Brnone said: It's a form of communication. We have a lot of squirrels around here, and usually when they're twitching their tails there is a hunting cat nearby.
They use their tails for balance, so if there is a wind, or they're just a little off-balance, they'll move their tails to compensate for it. I just fall, instead.
I agree, it is a form of communication, probably a warning sign to other squirrels about danger.
Because of the stimuli in their nerve retrievers spasm when they injure the pressure pads on their femurs.
    Its a form of communication
so they can have swirly squirrely poop.
    So they can fly.

At the pet shop the squirrels were kept in a very small space and they peed on each other...Can canadian squirrels be washed?
Sure, throw them in a washing machine on delicate.

Of course they can be washed, just don't use any products without consulting a vet. Water won't kill them. Can canadian squirrels be washed?
Squirrels, like all wild animals, don't need washing, they will care for themselves. Give them plenty of water an dry bedding and they will be fine. I don't know if they make good pets, but I hear they tast just like chicken. (just kidding)
Yeah, just put 'em in the washer and let the fun begin.
Sure. Use the kitchen sink or a dishpan outdoors, if the weather is warm. You don't need any soap and should be careful about using commercial products. Hold it firmly in a towel and gently lower it in lukewarm (like a baby bottle warm) water. Rub it gently. Avoid the face. Be sure to have another towel handy to dry it off. Hold on tight and keep the squirrel away from your face, too. It won't like the experience. Wear gloves. It might bite you. Good luck!
yea but it might clog up the toilet
eww...lol um yeah I don't see why not, but aren't squirrels wild animals?
    No they will melt.

    Southern flying squirrels as pets?

Does any one know if it is legal to have one as a pet in new hampshire. or who I call to find out the info?Southern flying squirrels as pets?
i believe esbilac is actually best for baby flying squirrels. i don't know if they are legal in new hampshire, but i think you call the local wildlife agency. a local veterinarian might also know... please realize that they do not make the best 'pets.' they are chewers and not very cuddly at all. they can be fun, but they are nothing like a rabbit or ferret, etc.Southern flying squirrels as pets?
Whether or not it's legal or not I can't say but if they are young enough to not have their eyes open feed Goat milk (cow milk will starve them to death) every three or four hours, handle them frequently and keep them on a heating pad with towels n the bottom so they can crawl around and adjust themselves to the right temperature. As they grow up be careful how you handle them and never, never grasp one tight enough to restrain it. Cup it in your hands and move it where you want it and release. Remember always there is no such thing as a pet squirrel only another wild squirrel who has lost the natural fear of human beings and should be treated as such.Any time you grasp a squirrel tightly you will instantly be bitten by it. Email me if you need any more advise.

Why do squirrels have bushy tails?

Excellent question! Not all squirrels do have bushy tails, but most of those that do use them for balance as they leap and climb. Think of the fellow on the high wire using an umbrella, it's the same sort of thing.

Are the squirrels peeved that the FBI is investigating their nuts?

yes, why do you think squirrels are always hiding their nuts? Are the squirrels peeved that the FBI is investigating their nuts?
No, the squirrels are happy that the Feds are finally paying attention to their nuts... the Rebel Squirrel Faction, or the R.S.F., has been acting out for years, hoarding their Nuts in a secret bunker under Telegraph Hill, in San Francisco, CA. They won't be happy that I have exposed them, but i know in the End they will thank me. The Elves in that region have become so concerned that We, The Keepers, have been called in to negotiate the situation. As of yesterday, October 16th, the Elven Faction of Ontario, (Mechu), is still unwilling to comply to the demands of the United Federation of Being... We are Wizards...We know the Way....right? What was the question again? Are the squirrels peeved that the FBI is investigating their nuts?
    To B.Y.O.B.,

That was *supposed* to be a secret! Now I have been requested, by the Ontario faction, to go out and buy all the nut liqueurs that I can find at the LCBO. Do you have any idea what that will do to our nut hoarding budget?
???????? I don't think the FBI likes nuts ??????? Well ur question didn't make sense either!!!!

    Repel squirrels?

any tips on how to keep them from digging up flowers beds? they are very destructive little creaturesRepel squirrels?
My grandmother told me many years ago to keep the squirrels and chipmunks from digging up and eating your flower bulbs, wrap your hair from your brush around the bulbs or roots of the flowers and that will keep them from digging up your flowers, because the hair is so fine and they don't like the feel of it in their mouth, so they will only try it once. I have done that now for many years and have never had a problem. You can also use thread or a fine yarn. It all has worked for me.Repel squirrels?
    do you have a dog?
After using Dried Blood, found at the garden center, they leave my flower beds alone. Sprinkle around where they dig and re-apply occasionally.
blood meil works good (they don't like the smell of it) also cayanne pepper works great, but it has to be re applied after a rain
I feed the little critters, they are so entertaining. Try feeding them away from your flower beds then maybe they will leave the flowers alone.

P.S. I have tried the Cayenne Pepper where I don't want them and it didn't work .
buy a dog or...fence in your bed. You will need to cover the top with fencing, too. I use Hardware cloth (like chicken wire but with finer grid) to protect my tomatos and pepper.
try moth balls they hate the smell

    Squirrels and Suet...???

I thought squirrels didn't like suet? They are eating it all up. How do I keep them out of it? I have it in a suet holder hanging from a tree.Squirrels and Suet...???
Rubbermaid makes a nice, effective, squirrel guard that you hang from the tree and then hang the feeder under it. I have about 8 of them. I have had them for many years and they show no sign of wearing out. I bought mine at Lowes.Squirrels and Suet...???
put some pepper around, they don't like pepper
Sprinkle cayenne pepper on it and around the base of the tree. The birds cannot discern heat...therefore it does not bother them...but the squirrels can smell it, so they leave it alone.
You can't keep them out of it. Squirrels are going to eat it. You might try hanging it off a fence post if you have one, but don't count on that deterring the squirrels.

I use Hardware cloth (like chicken wire but with finer grid) to protect my tomatos and pepper.
try moth balls they hate the smell

er, maybe king of the backyard...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqCGRRo34…Should squirrels be the new king of the jungle?
I'm cool with being the king of the backyard! Today I mowed the back yard so it looks all nice, and I am in control of the yard! Also, there is a BBQ AND I can pull out the cooler full of beers!Should squirrels be the new king of the jungle?
    Of the P%26amp;S Jungle yes.

I've been thinking of asking if you'd like to be cloned some future weekday, as you were most entertaining in your appearance as # 1 in P%26amp;S.

'Twould be a pleasure to make you king again!
Well, I know several squirrels and a few of them live in our backyard. They rule the roost! Then, there's a special squirrel who wanders around Y/A, he is the bomb!

    Squirrels rule!
Yes. But of the forest, not the jungle. Everyone knows parrots are the kings of the jungle.

Do squirrels pee in the trees?

yes, squirrels pee in trees. actually, they're pretty indiscriminate about where they pee. they'll pee darned near anywhere. maybe it's some kind of territorial thing.

some rodents, like the bushy tailed woodrat (also known as the packrat) do use something like a bathroom. they have one single site that they always use to tinkle. the site even gets inherited from generation to generation. often it is inside a cave or protected burrow, and millenia of packrat pee congeals and crystallizes into a hard, almost amber-like form. like amber, these pee globs can preserve insects, seeds and other materials from hundreds or even thousands of years in the past.Do squirrels pee in the trees?
I've never seen a squirrel pee, but I hope that atleast the girl squirrels go into a hole in the tree to do their business.Do squirrels pee in the trees?
nah, they look for nearby port-a-johns!!!
do bears pee in the woods????
I'm pressuming so yes.. where else will they pee?!
    no, they use rest rooms!
    yes

Do squirrels in the holes of trees?

yes they do all the timeDo squirrels in the holes of trees?
Squirrels live wherever they can find a dry spot out of the weather.

Are squirrels part of the rat family?

No, they are classified under separate families, squirrels belong to 'sciuridae' rats belong to 'muridae'.

Sciuridae means 'shade-tail', and refers to the bushy appendage possessed by many of its members. It includes tree squirrels, ground squirrels, chipmunks, marmots etc. (All having this feature).

Muridae includes mice and rats, gerbils etc.Are squirrels part of the rat family?
Gray squrrel (Sciurus carolinensis) belongs to family Sciuridae and rats (Rattus norvegicus) belongs to family Muridae.

However, they are both in order of Rodentia (rodents) and fall into same suborder Sciurognathi. The group is characterized by a specific shape to the lower jaw.Are squirrels part of the rat family?
No. Both belong to the same order, Rodentia, but they're in different families - Sciuridae for squirrels and Muridae for rats.
They are a rodent and I would never kill a squirrel but stomp on rats.
    no, they are not

Do squirrels ever eat smaller animal such as mice?

Yes, sometimes they eat mice and birds.Do squirrels ever eat smaller animal such as mice?
they ususally do not inless they are really hungray.Do squirrels ever eat smaller animal such as mice?
I wouldn't be surprised. They look cute but they are nasty little buggers.
They don't hunt them, but all rodents are not opposed to eating flesh if the need arises from lack of other food sources. A mother squirrel will eat her own young in times of food scarcity. Most likely to eat another animal (carcass only, they're not hunters) is mother squirrels who have higher protine needs.
    No. Squirrels are vegetarians.
Yes they will eat smaller animals - particularly small rodents. I've seen ground squirrel species eating mice in the past - it just depends what's available to them at the time - sometimes they just see it as an easy meal and take what they can.
squirrels are not necessary vegetarians..... They will raid a birds nest for the eggs... and even tiny birds... they have been known to eat dead mice... ( if they cant find anything else)... I dont think a squirrel could catch a mouse. lol

they eat insects. and all that other good stuff..

    why u ask?
no - squirrels are not meat eaters
This place says they eat carcass if nothing else is available.
there not meat eaters.here is something you can do if you enjoy seeing them screw the cap of a peanut butter jar to a tree and cut the bottom off they love it

  • I have started a bird sanctuary in my backyard but now the squirrels have discovered my feeders....?

the little fuzzy tailed rats leave little or nothing for the birds plus they chew holes in my seed storage bins. any help you can give will be deeply appreciated.I have started a bird sanctuary in my backyard but now the squirrels have discovered my feeders....?
We buy bullets without any powder (or whatever is used in them). We shoot the little buggers. (We have pecan trees in our back yard and the little buggers bite into them just enough to ruin them). The cats next door enjoy eating their brains.I have started a bird sanctuary in my backyard but now the squirrels have discovered my feeders....?
Put feeders on the tops of poles away from trees so the squirrels can't climb to get to them. Keep the seed in metal containers with tops that can't be opened by squirrels.
There are a variety of products sold for squirrel deterrence. Put the feeders on poles and put a ';squirrel guard'; on the pole...it is like an inverted dish that makes it hard for them to climb the pole. Metal trash cans with lids for seed storage.

Also consider putting up some squirrel feeders on the trees...if you make it a hassle for them to eat the bird food AND provide them with their own food supply problem solved...and you'll have more friends to entertain you in your yard.
There is no way to completely stop these tree rats but squirrel proof bird feeders do a good job. They sell them at Home Depot
put your bird feeders on poles away from anything a squirrel can jump from. if the squirrels decide to climb up the pole, put vaseline on it. sounds silly, but it works.

What are some creative toys that involve squirrels?

I NEED TO MAKE A TOY AND IT HAS TO ENCLUDE SQUIRRELS-THEME AND IT HAS TO BE CREATIVE!!!!! PLS PLS HELP!!! I CANT THINK OF ANY THING TO MAKE FOR MY PROJECT!!!!!! ANSWER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKSWhat are some creative toys that involve squirrels?
you didnt say an age that the game is intended for and my only idea would be for little kids. how about something like chutes and ladders but its squirrels jumping thru trees. the have to gather so many nuts to win the game.

    Why do squirrels. . .?

twitch so much?? cause i was just watching one in my front yard and it would dig, and then twitch like 6 times in a row. haha. just wondering. Why do squirrels. . .?
Squirrels are prey animals. They have to constantly be on the lookout for predators, which means they are jumpy and have high energy which makes them twitch. Why do squirrels. . .?
almost all squirrels do this, but i have noticed on real cold days, when they are sitting on limbs sunning, they don't do this twitching. its the only time i noticed that they don't do it!
    maybe its their nerves

    Can't squirrels read?

We put posters everywhere on our street, informing everyone ';For a clean street, no papers or garbage.'; But the signs seem to be ignored. The squirrels got into the garbage bags, tore them open and littered the street! It's abominable, can't they read? Can't squirrels read?
I put a great big heavy rock on top of my garbage can to keep the squirrels out. They CAN read, but choose not to.Can't squirrels read?
    Funny!...............
Well leave them some nuts, go out in the early morning, and make a squirrel noise (kind of like a tisking noise with your mouth) have a nut or fruit or cracker waiting, eventually the squirrel will either take it out of your hand or wait for you to leave then go get it. Do this for a few days in a row. Its a peace offering and they'll come to trust you, so don't screw it up. then they'll go drag out the neighbors' trash and leave yours alone, but you may find them knocking on the door or window for a spot of breakfast. I'm serious, I used to have a squirrel hat would climb up the side of the brick building or take the outside stairs and knock on the window in the morning for me to give it nuts or toast while I had my coffee, it was our routine for about a year.
Yes they can. They're just squirreslexic....
Yeah, they read the sign but........all those goody bags were too much to pass up!! If they are too much of a problem you might want to try taking corn on the cob, used or not, rolling it in peanut butter and then in seeds. If you hang it in a tree or nail it to a board in a tree it should keep them fed enough not to go through your garbage. They can read though. I have seen them many times right outside the beware of dog signs taunting those poor chained dogs. LOL, it is a great show when you see the squirrel taunting it to, just for laughs and only with a well trained dog, let the dog off the leash. Whew, I have never seen a squirrel run that fast before. Or leave so much hair in the fence! LOL
    HAHA, thats funny.. obviously not.
You know, I don't think they can read. They get the raccoons to tell them what the signs say. However the raccoons are prankster so they lie. Good luck and buy a better garbage can.
    lol, no-no they cant.

I bottle fed a squirrel and raised him and I'm positive he couldn't read.
CUTE. LOL SECURE YOUR GARBAGE CONTAINERS FROM ALL PESTS .I ONCE HAD TROUBLE WITH A RACCOON FAMILY. THEY WERE CUTE BUT ALSO MESSY. MY HUSBAND TIED DOWN THE COVERS .PROBLEM SOLVED. GOOD LUCK

    Are there squirrels in Australia?

This is probably a really stupid question lol But I'm writing a book and the closest zoo is 4 hours away and doesnt take phone call questions and have not replied to my emails I sent about a year ago.

By squirrels I mean the sort of squirrels you find in Canada %26amp; the US. The kind with the big bushy tails, and chatter a lot, love peanuts, live in trees sort.

Are there those sort of squirrels in Australia, or does Australia have its own species that are similar, live in trees, bushy tailed rodent ?Are there squirrels in Australia?
There are no squirrels in Australia. The niche which squirrels occupy in the US %26amp; Canada is occupied by the possum, an arboreal marsupial species. See the links for more information.

Though there were once small populations of American Grey Squirrel and Northern Palm Squirrel which originated from introductions and escapees, it would appear that these populations have been entirely eradicated. Are there squirrels in Australia?
Australia became separated from the rest of the world before squirrels evolved. Almost all the mammalian nitches are filled by marsupials. The exceptions are bats, which could fly over and those mammals introduced by humans: dingo and European hare.
This year there are 2 maybe 3 nests of squirrels(12 to 18) in our little ... We don't have squirrels in Australia, but to keep possums from crawling along ...

    Can squirrels carry rabies?

I haven't been bitten...Just curious. Thanks :DCan squirrels carry rabies?
No. All rodents have something in their DNA that does not support the Rabies virus- scientists are not exactly sure why. There has not ever been a documented case of Rabies in a squirrel. The most common species to carry the virus (besides pets) are skunks, raccoons, bats, and opossums.

I'm pasting in a passage taken directly from the CDC (Center for Disease Control) website:

Small rodents (such as squirrels, rats, mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, and chipmunks, ) and lagomorphs (such as rabbits and hares) are almost never found to be infected with rabies and have not been known to cause rabies among humans in the United States. Bites by these animals are usually not considered a risk of rabies unless the animal was sick or behaving in any unusual manner and rabies is widespread in your area. However, from 1985 through 1994, woodchucks accounted for 86% of the 368 cases of rabies among rodents reported to CDC. Woodchucks or groundhogs (Marmota monax) are the only rodents that may be frequently submitted to state health department because of a suspicion of rabies. In all cases involving rodents, the state or local health department should be consulted before a decision is made to initiate postexposure prophylaxis (PEP).

For more information about rabies in rodents and lagomorphs, see: Childs, J. E., Colby, L., Krebs, J. W., Strine, T., Feller, M., Noah, D., Drenzek, C., Smith, J.S., %26amp; Rupprecht, C. E. (1997). Surveillance and spatiotemporal associations of rabies in rodents and lagomorphs in the United States, 1985-1994. Journal of Wildlife Diseases, 33(1), 20-27.Can squirrels carry rabies?
Squirrels can carry rabies. They are just less likely to transmit it. Sciurids have a certain dentation that makes them less likely to transmit it.

I believe the answer is yes

    thank you
    Yes, they can.
    yes.
    .

Here is what the governmanet site says about carriers.

What animals are likely to be rabies carriers?

Bites from skunks, bats, foxes, coyotes, bobcats, raccoons and unvaccinated cats are sources of rabies. In California, skunks are the most likely to have rabies. In fact, about 38% of skunks, 31% of raccoons, 14% of bats and 4% of foxes carry rabies. In Northern California, raccoons are the main source of rabies. In Southern California, along the United States-Mexico border, rabies is common in dogs.

Mice, rats, squirrels, groundhogs, guinea pigs, gerbils, chipmunks, hamsters and rabbits are unlikely to transmit rabies. Contact your county public health department to determine which animals are high incidence carriers of rabies in your area.
    i belive they can
Yes, they can. Were some cases in Illinois many years ago. They also can carry mad cow disease. There was a case in Arkansas where eating brains of squirrels is done by some people and they came down sick with what is commonly known as mad cow disease. The health department tracked it to the squirrels the family had eaten (or rather the brains of the squirrels)
yes, google rabies and it should tell u the in and out of rabies
    Yes
I would think so, most any mammal can carry rabies.
    i'm sure they could.
    yes
    yes
Yes, nasty little critters, aren't they?
    course, why not?!
    surely
Indeed. Watch out for their bites.
    yes
if their hands are big enough, maybe?
Yes. In fact squirrels are one of the most likely to get rabies. They live among rabbits, another likely rabies victim. So they are liable to get it.

they ARE rats i hate these filthy uglies, i put squirel traps under the three trees in my yard. and no ther not the humane ones incase ur wondering.
    yes they would

and if you find the skeleton of them -- its hard to tell the difference
No, because they would still be cute and stay outside.
Yeah probably, well at least like Possums.
    prabaly
    they would be rats!
I DO hate them like rats.... cept I still swerve to miss them if they are in the street. Being run over isn't a fun way to die. When I was in college, we used to hand feed them French Fries.
I don't think so, they are still different looking than rats even without the tail. I personally think rats are awesome, and everyone should have a pet rat before passing judgment. They are smart, and fun little social critters.
I don't hate rats. Besides i know people that hate squirrels. I have a teacher that throws bubble gum in her backyard, says it is a CHEAP way to kill the nasty squirrels. Their mouths get stuck closed. The neighbor behind my mom shoots at the squirrels with a BB gun in his backyard!
I DO hate them like rats. Pesky things.
I have a ton of squirrels.

They are better than rats but a pest just the same.

They chew through many things like wires and garbage cans.

Even without fuzzy tails, they would not be as bad as ground crawling rats that eat garbage and make nests in your drawers and furniture, peeing and dumping as they go.
    i love there face
I hate them almost as much as rats even with the big fluffly tails. They eat garbage and carry disease, so what's the difference. We call them tree rats.
I don't think the ones that admire their cute fuzzy tails call them rats.

    This one sees me, but does not see me in color since squirrels are color-blind. Don't let that fact fool you though as these furry creatures can spot a peanut from several hundred feet away and will come-a-running.';

So the answer is yes, they are color blind. Another site referred to ';squirrels are yellow color blind.'; Here's the link to the above article and the second link will give you all kinds of possibilities for looking up the facts on this little critter.
    Never ask one
I'm colourblind, but i'm not a squirrel, however squirrels are rodents and most non nocturnal rodents are known to have good eyesight so i think its safe to assume that they are not colourblind.

My moms neighbor feeds all the squirrels & birds what can she do?

they have ruined her garden, especailly all the squirrels. She pours buckets of food out each day and they bury there peanuts in her yard too. There are peanut trees growing everywere in her yard now. They look like small weed trees and also lots of bird poop from the birds?? what can she do..Are the squirrels part of the rodent family and do they carry germs ??

She told the lady and all she said was COVER up your garden, very rude.... is this unhealthy since its black birds( crows) and squirrels ? ThanksMy moms neighbor feeds all the squirrels %26amp; birds what can she do?
Squirrels are alright but crows are generally pests the world over. I don't think you are technically allowed to be feeding crow and pigeons because they are really a nuisance in areas where their populations are out of control.

Call you local health authorities or any special body which deals with animals. They should be able to give you some good advice. They may also be able to come down and check up on your neighbour. My moms neighbor feeds all the squirrels %26amp; birds what can she do?
call the zoning office %26amp; the dept of health
We used to feed our squirrels in the back yard too, but we weren't overrun with them. We had a few that came looking for peanuts and that was it, they didn't ruin anything and only a few birds came with them.

What you have is a problem! I agree with everyone else here by contacting authorities or even just stop at the police station and ask them if there's something you can do about this neighbor. Living in a small neighborhood, you have to respect those around you which your neighbor is not. I know how this feels as our neighbors do nothing but fight day and night! They weren't fond if the squirrels but like I said, there were just a few here.
I'd enjoy the nature. I love animals.

How do they cope with FREEZING temperatures and SNOW/BLIZZARDS? Do they go underground somewhere?Where do animals in the wild go in the winter? The Birds, Squirrels, Antelopes, etc., etc.?
Most birds fly to warmer areas, Squirrels go into dens usually under ground and eat food put away when it was warmer, Antelope move to slightly warmer areas when pipeline or roads allow but mostly stick it out and live off of what little they can find and stored up fat.Where do animals in the wild go in the winter? Hey, that's funny! Publish it to the web so we can see it!

We don't have any bird feeders, but when squirrels come by our yard to bury their treasures, we (my brothers and I) usually run out after it, trying to shoot it with airsoft guns. We've hit it a few times but it comes back even more often now. Stupid squirrel.
I put cayenne on the seeds, doesn't bother the birds but the squirrels don't like it.
No. If they are willing to go through all that trouble to ge a meal, why bother them.

What is wrong with the squirrels? health question..?

my mom has a bird feeder on our deck. the squirrels usually come up and eat from it. lately i've been noticing that the squirrels are extremely mangy looking. most of them either have bald spots on their back or things that look like abscesses on their spine. i even found a squirrel tail on my deck the other day... are these squirrels diseased? what's wrong with them? What is wrong with the squirrels? health question..?
It sounds like it, if i were you I'd call the CDC.What is wrong with the squirrels? health question..?
Could be a flea infestation or skin disease. Another problem could be what they're getting from the bird food. If it contains corn then they could have a vitamin deficiency. I would switch to seed that contains absolutely no corn. The best kind to get is just all black-oil sunflower seeds as this attracts more native bird species and will still bring your squirrels around if you want them.

If you can, call a wild-life center and talk to them although the squirrels may be killed to prevent spread of disease.
im no expert on squirrels but look at this it looks like they have squirrel pox.

Squirrels. Will they ruin my garden plans?

I planted some sunflower seeds. When I went to water them yesterday, I found they had been dug up and eaten (I found a half empty shell next to one hole)

I assume its squirrels we get lots of those in the garden.

Anyway I have bought bulbs (Anemone, Persian Buttercup and triteleia) I plan on planting them today. Do squirrels also dig up and eat bulbs? If so what can I do to deter them?Squirrels. Will they ruin my garden plans?
I sprinkle black pepper around the perimeter of my garden (any pepper will do). You need to reapply if it gets wet, but it won't hurt your plants, and keeps squirrels and possums away!Squirrels. Will they ruin my garden plans?
I think you should be fine with those bulbs. Squirrels seem to prefer crocus, daffodil %26amp; tulips bulbs IF they're going to munch on bulbs.

How we handle the squirrel problem and we have a lot of them around is to feed them as we do the birds. That way they have their own food source and leave other things alone.
Yes they will dig them up and eat them.

I have a sonic squirrel scare device which sends out a high pitched noise when they trigger the device. It cost about 拢30 and did the trick.

Just google it and you will see what I mean.

Eastern grey squirrels outnumber red squirrels by about a factor of.. in Great Britain?

sorry I don't know , but I have found an interesting article for you about black squirrels endangering your red ones in Great Britain.

My kitten catches squirrels and mice and EATS THEM!!!!!!

She's crazy! I always find a half eaten squirrel or mouse in her home.

So should I worried about her getting rabies or choking on their skulls or something???????? My kitten catches squirrels and mice and EATS THEM!!!!!!
She's getting herself the best possible diet. Raw meat and Bones. Be sure she has her shots and flea meds and has regular Vet visits. She's doing what cats have been doing forever! What a girl!My kitten catches squirrels and mice and EATS THEM!!!!!!
It's natural for a cat to want to chase rodents. I saw on animal planet that cats are the number one hunters of the felines. I don't think you have to worry about her choking or getting rabies, just make sure she has gotten all of her shots. But if you want to limit the amount of ';surprises'; she leaves on your pillow, I'd just keep her inside more often.
Cats are predators. Their natural instinct is to kill and eat smaller animals. If you don't want her doing this then you have to keep her in the house.

Did you know that cats are considered wild? That is why you don't have to get them licensed like dogs. We were told that cats will automatically go back to their natural instincts once they are out in the wild, even if they have been a house cat for years and so the laws are different about cat licenses than dogs. Dogs will not remember automatically how to be a wild animal, but cats do! It's interesting.

So, your cat is just doing what she thinks she needs to do to survive.
Squirrels don't get rabies. However, if your cat is kept outdoors, of course she should be inoculated against rabies if she is older than 12 weeks.

And she's not crazy. Cats are predators, and they hunt.
My cat bring stuff home all the time. She's 11 and has never gotten a shot and has always been completely healthy. Appearently, the only thing you should worry about your cat shoking on is cooked chicken bones.
She could certainly get parasites or diseases from them since they are wild, yes. It'd be better to keep her indoors where she's safe and not killing off native wildlife.
It's just a cat thing; our cat killed animals until she passed at 24 years old! It's just a natural instinct. Make sure she is up to date on all her shots and she should be fine.
    lol

Take her to the vet and maybe they can find out why she does that or keep her inside the house.

    (C) same as B but based on reproductive organ structure

    (D) This is a phenomenon where two species produce a fertile hybrid but it does not reproduce.

Is it legal or illegal to shoot grey squirrels and magpies..?

    legal in the uk

no closed season, they are classed as vermin. Is it legal or illegal to shoot grey squirrels and magpies..?
As long as you have the sporting rights then you are more than welcome to shoot or trap them. A MK4 Fenn trap is very effective for squirrels and a Larson trap works well on magpies and other corvids.

Follow guide lines on the use of a trap.

Shooting with either a shotgun or an air rifle is also another effect way of dealing with these pests.

Last summer on my shoot we shot and trapped over 100 tree rats. Perfectly acceptable as we have no bag limits or season on the tree rat.

The magpie is part of the Corvidae family and not the crow family. The rules and regulations covering the use of a firearm near the public highway or a home applies to the whole of the United Kingdon and not just England.

Good hunting. Is it legal or illegal to shoot grey squirrels and magpies..?
yes, magpie is part of the crow family therefore covered by general licence, so its legal to shoot them.

Also grey squirrels are killing off the reds population, though they have't managed to get as far as Highlands where i like.

If do, we have enough ';guns'; up here to stop them

Some people seem to get confused as to what a ';general licence'; is. You don't have to apply for one, hence the word ';general';.

If I needed to shoot a something like a fox for example, I would have to apply for a ';licence'; to stalk and control the fox if necessary.

The fact you are asking makes me wonder, where are you going to shoot? and are you using an air rifle or shotgun?

I hope u read about firearm laws first, you can't just walk into someones property and start shooting, also its a criminal offence in England to shoot near a road, or houses.

Join the BASC and only shoot on you own land or where you have permission , follow there guidelines or police will just take ur gun and maybe ever charge u.

As the laws are different in Scotland, the general licence is also different, so i had to Google, that's the link for advice leaflets below.

    ';As well as the offences already mentioned, it is against the law, in England and Wales, to fire an air rifle within 50 feet of the centre of a highway, if by doing so you cause any member of the public, using that right of way, to be injured, interrupted or endangered. This offence could be committed, for example, by someone on private property close to a road who uses an air rifle in a way which endangers people on the road. ';

If by doing so you cause any member of the public, using that right of way, to be injured, interrupted or endangered.

In Scotland, shooting (at) anyone or there property would be a type of assault or worse(if person or animal shot), reckless endangement, or breech of the peece only if the police decide that is the case.
Grey squirrels are considered an invasive species in the UK and the shooting of them is encouraged since they're largely responsible for the decimation of the native red squirrel populations.

Magpies should be fair game, but you'll probably need a general license to hunt them.
There is a hunting season for squirrels in most states. However, both the Yellow-billed and Black-billed Magpie are federally protected as migratory birds in a treaty that was signed with Canada and Mexico in the very early 70's.
Legal in the UK. Illegal in the state of Colorado in the United States of America because it is the state bird. In most areas it is legal to shoot grey squirrels, just not in a reserve!

I need to know how to get squirrels out of my attic.I heard them today, 2 of them.I just moved in here too.?

Call an exterminator who advertises to get rid of and seal out varmints. They can get them out then seal the areas they have been using for access. If you don't seal the place afterwards getting rid of them won't last as they or their relatives will return.I need to know how to get squirrels out of my attic.I heard them today, 2 of them.I just moved in here too.?
Call your local humane society and ask to borrow a live trap. When you go to get it ask them to show you how to use it. Take the trap home and bait and set it in the attic. Wait a few days and check the trap. If you caught one or two take it outside and let it go. Now you have to have your attic repaired around the upper part where the squirrels r getting in. Good luck. Don't forget to return the cage. Or if you want your own most hardware stores sell them for about $40.00.I need to know how to get squirrels out of my attic.I heard them today, 2 of them.I just moved in here too.?
I've heard that mothballs will get rid of them or sprinkle where they are coming in with cayenne pepper. They also make chemical products to get rid of them at places like Home Depot or Lowes...I think I have seen one called Squirrel Away.

What do squirrels nest look like?

From the ground they usually look like a big ball or cluster of dead leaves high up in the branches of a tree.

    Where do squirrels sleep?

They sleep in nests which are made of twigs and leaves and the interior is lined with fur, feathers or other soft material for comfort. There are normally two exits in the nest, and they are built high in a tree between two strong branches. They build their nests high enough to provide protection from ground predators, yet not too high or the nest will be destroyed by the winds. Squirrels also will build a nest in a hollowed-out tree cavity.Where do squirrels sleep?

    Why do squirrels bark?

There was just one right outside my front yard. It was barking and making strange noise for like an hour. Why do they bark? Why do squirrels bark?
One time I made my squirrel mad. He was digging in the garbage and I wanted him to get away from it so I threw a shirt in his direction and it pissed him off and for like a half an hour he sat on top of his cage barking and flicking his tail back and forth. I mean he always makes little honking noises to talk to me but this time was more like barking and he did it constant for a long time, so I'm gonna say that something in that area( maybe you being there) made him mad. You should be careful when they seem angry squirrels will attack you when their pissed and you would be surprised just how many times they can bite you in a few seconds. But they are very territorial so coming close to their space or food will set them off.Why do squirrels bark?
Squirrels make a sound to communicate. All animals make sounds, even fish. It's simply their way to speak with each other and often times to warn other animals of danger.

Squirrels also make loud sounds to scare off potential danger.
I bark all the time too. I see nothing unusual about it at all.
It is a form of communication. I have heard before and it seemed like two squirrels were arguing.
they are trying to scare other animals/people off to protect their nest, plus their nuts
    Because they cant talk.
    Because they can't sing.

    Are squirrels dangerous?

My mom always tells me that squirrels are dangerous, but they don't appear to be dangerous to me. Is she just crazy? Are squirrels dangerous?
No your mom is not crazy. Squirrels are wild animals, and like any wild animal can be unpredictable and dangerous. They can also carry rabies. Are squirrels dangerous?
Totally! We are thousands of times more dangerous to them than they are to us!!

Is your mom afraid of squirrels? If she is, next time she asks you to do something, tell her, ';I'd rather jump out of a tenth-story plate-glass window being chased by rabid, chainsaw-of-doom-wielding squirrels.'; That should freak her out.
if you catch one wether its in a trap or w.e and try to grab it, they can be very mean, i know a lady whos pet squirell went crazy on her and sent her to the ER but ne ways in the wild you probably wont get a chance to get close enough to them to get hurt bc they are quick to run up the tree
Squirrels are cute- But even the 'tamer' ones are wild creatures. They have those long strong claws for climbing, and strong jaws and sharp teeth for cracking open nuts. A squirrel that is frightened or has rabies for instance is very dangerous.
    They can be.

Do squirrels like college campuses or something?

    - I've been to a few college campuses on the East Coast and they all had a lot of squirrels and more than what you would see in a neighborhoodDo squirrels like college campuses or something?
It's actually because they're imitating the mating behaviors of college students, and thus reproducing more rapidly. If we mixed in tiny little condoms with the the peanuts we toss to them, this problem would quickly go away.Do squirrels like college campuses or something?
Oak trees. And there are a lot of nuts on college campuses. If there is any logical explanation, the trees are planted en mass instead of varieties. And oak trees live a long time, requiring little maintenance. And there is little to no vehicular traffic so the squirrels have a safe environment to live. The students probably feed them too, which attracts more squirrels. A constant food source and a good neighborhood. I'd want to live there too if I were a squirrel. The architecture is aesthetically pleasing. Perhaps we have squirrels with good taste.
    More acorns I guess :-)
Definetly...Either they are the smartest animals in the world or its the very messy and clumsy students who leave tons of garbage and food everywhere. THey are everywhere though and almost look like freshman scurrying to class early in the morning...

    Aaaauuugggghhhh!!! Squirrels?

Any ideas for keeping squirrels from digging out the bulbs from my garden? Aside from staking out my beds with a pellet gun or slingshot....Aaaauuugggghhhh!!! Squirrels?
I had the same problem a few years back. This sounds a little weird, but after I did this it was ';bye bye squirrels.'; What you do is take a container of cayenne pepper and sprinkle it over the garden. Don't worry, it won't harm the plants or the squirrels. Whenever the squirrels dig through your garden it will be like snorting cayenne pepper up their noses. This obviously causes irritation, and they will leave like that. Hot sauce will have the same affect with causing irritation, but when the liquid soaks through the soil I noticed that it had a negative outcome on some of my plants. I would just go with the pepper.Aaaauuugggghhhh!!! Squirrels?
    squirrels are super cute!!!

I have an idea, at places like lowes, home depot, %26amp; walmart... they have these thing that r squirrel feeders that u put on the ground %26amp; they get on and it is super fun 2 watch! its so cute, jus put it near ur garden, %26amp; they should go after it instead =)
When you plant your bulbs, get some hardware cloth with about one inch squares, and when you dig the hole place the hardware cloth over the bulbs and cover with dirt. The hardware cloth is not cloth, it is like fencing with small holes. you can get it at any hardware store. You will have to cut it with snippers for each bunch of bulbs that you plant. The squirrels can't chew through it though. Good luck, pain in the butt, aren't they?
Pellet guns or a Slingshot!?How nice--they are creatures, too, who feel pain like we do.

Plant daffodil bulbs, instead next autumn--animals dislike the taste of them.
You can place moth balls around the flower beds. You can also make a mixture to spray on the flowers.

    1 small bottle hot sauce

    1 gallon water

1 tsp mild dish liquid (helps the mix stay on the plants)
Blend blood meal into the soil around the bulbs to deter squirrels from digging and eating the bulbs. Voles are bigger problems for me 'cause the little beggars tunnel for them from underneath. Be sure to mulch it or it may attract dogs, racoons or others.

The trick for me is to plant them deep enough, at least 8 inches down. Another good deterrent is to put about an inch of gravel over the bulbs before you finish filling the hole in. The bulbs will grow through it OK, but the squirrels won't want to dig in it.

Plant covers are also effective against squirrel damage to bulbs. Chicken wire flat on the soil marks the planting site and prevents digging.

A diluted solution of hot sauce (one tablespoon hot sauce to one gallon water) misted on the soil and bulbs is another effective deterrent.

I believe squirrels get blamed for much that voles may be doing. Voles are rodents, eating both plant material and some insects. The Townsend meadow vole makes tunnels but also cruises on the soil surface. The little creeping meadow vole is more apt to stay underground, often sharing mole tunnels.

As insectivores, moles eat worms, slugs and bugs, including many garden pests. Though they favor prey that moves, moles also relish slug eggs, juicy tidbits that look rather like pop beads. Though plants seldom attract foraging moles, an occasional Townsend's mole may eat tulip bulbs. However, most moles will refuse them even when the bulbs are offered to them in cages.

  • Is a gamo air gun have good accuracy for shooting targets and squirrels?

Yes. Make sure you have the type that shoots 1000 fps if you are hunting squirrels. .22 caliber helps for hunting, too. If you can't kill with one shot, it just becomes cruel.

With a halfway decent scope, you can have great accuracy. Some folks say gamo isn't up to the level of beeman or RWS. They are right, but for the price, gamo is ok.

How do I get rid of squirrels?

what kind of poison can I use to kill squirrelsHow do I get rid of squirrels?
If you are talking about reducing the population in the yard the best approach would be to use a HavaHart live trap #1040..it looks too big but you will have better results than with the smaller ';squirrel sized'; traps..personal suggestion would to just transplant the trap into a garbage can full of water for about five minutes... If you are talking about rats in the attic, there really isn't a good toxin that they make for them, though if you take regular rat bait and pulverize it, then mix with equal parts of peanut butter they will readily consume that. You are unable to place the baits in a protected station as you would when dealing with rats so only use the bait up in the attic, but note if you have squirrels in the attic more than likely they are nesting in the attic so there is more of a chance of the animal dieing up there than with rats. How do I get rid of squirrels?
Try to use electronics instead of poison. You can buy a plug in device for mice that works very well on most small rodents.I tried this on my Father's home in rural Cape Breton ( chipmunk heaven ) and while he was away for the winter months, so were the squirrels and chipmunks. I feel so bad when I think of a small creature suffering a smashed foot or neck or trying to escape one of those awful glue traps.Making them not want to be there is so much more humane than slaughtering then. Look carefully at the word humane and consider what it means and its derivative.

I just bought a Savage .17 HMR, I plan on hunting ground squirrels. What size scope should I get?

Depends on how far away you plan to shoot, under 50 yards a good all around 4x would be fine, under 100 yards may want a variable powered scope, say a 3-9 or 4-12 if you are shooting beyond 100 a 4-12 to 6-18 power would work out well. Just buy a quality brand IE Nikon, Burris, Leopold. there are cheaper scopes than these but you get want you pay for in optics. My experience has been that Nikon offers the brightest image and clearest lenses for the money. Brightness pay dividends in lower light conditions, and Tasco and Simmons just don't have what it take in low light or clarity.I just bought a Savage .17 HMR, I plan on hunting ground squirrels. You dont need a scope.........you are hunting squirrels.........not elk at 500 yards away. Use the iron sights....once you get used to it.....its the best.....most reliable way.I just bought a Savage .17 HMR, I plan on hunting ground squirrels. What size scope should I get?
A red dot scope gives you parallax free sighting.
Get a BSA Sweet 17 scope. I have a 2x7, but they have all the way up to 6x18. It depends on how far away you want to shoot the squirrels, but a 2x7 should do the trick. It works pretty good on armadillos.
I would use a 4x40 scope, just one of the cheaper brands like Tasco. This is what I have on one of my .22's for small game.

They make some small 3x20 scopes for .22's, but I like a bigger view, so it is easier to follow something that is on the move.
You can get the nikon prostaff 3x9 for under 150 or around there, I think cost is about 130.
If you use a scope at all, there are plenty of low-power scopes on the market designed for use with 22's. There's certainly no reason to get anything more than a fixed-four.
I prefer my sights on my .22 for squirrel hunting but if you insist on a scope a fixed 4x should work out fine.
For those of you recommending him to stay with the open sights, as of 2006, Savage didn't make a .17 HMR with open sights. While normally an advocate for higher end optics on a rifle, on a .17hmr I would, (and did), buy a BSA Sweet 17. The lack of recoil in the 17 makes some of the concerns about an inexpensive scope fade away. The range in power, and the calibrated elevation adjustments give you the ability to do some pretty long range target shooting. I put a 3-12x40 on my Savage 93R17-BTVS, and have used it both in the woods for rabbits, and at the range to plink. The clarity and light gathering is not quite as good as it's higher priced counterparts, but is more than adequate for what you want it for. For right around $100, you can't go wrong. Good luck, and have fun.
A good varmint scope would be a .32 mm try it and see
